Teessider who experienced ‘claustrophobic’ mini-sub tells of ‘dread’ over missing Titanic crew

A Teessider who experienced a “claustrophobic” mini-sub has told of his “dread” over the missing Titanic crew.

David Hunter took part in a training exercise on board Pisces II – a land-based mini-sub based at Dents Wharf on the River Tees. He said the unit was sealed and pressurised to “simulate its sub-sea environment”, and eventually went into service in the North Sea. Not long after its sister craft, Pisces III, ended up plunging to the sea bed with the crew inside after its sphere flooded.

The 85-year-old, who lived in Eaglesliffe at the time, has opened up on his experience as the rescue mission to find five trapped submariners near the Titanic wreck continues. Crews are desperately hunting for the sub, with “banging noises” even being detected – but oxygen is set to run out at 12.08pm on Thursday.
