‘Inspirational’ school chief handed headteacher of the year gong beating thousands of nominees

A “great and inspirational” Teesside school chief has been presented with a headteacher of the year gong.

Maria Carlton, who is the executive headteacher for Bewley Primary School, in Billingham, and Kirklevington Primary Schools within The 1590 Trust, has been selected from thousands of nominations to win a Pearson National Teaching silver award.

Maria – who was honoured with the silver award for headteacher of the year in a primary school for her “outstanding” commitment – has been described by staff as an “exceptionally hard-working, immensely inspirational and resilient leader who selflessly supports and strives for the best for staff and pupils alike.”
